This text alternative provides an accessible summary of the Fixed-term Contract Policy visual flowchart [PDF].

Overview of chart structure

Chart begins when a fixed-term post is identified. Then there are 3 initial steps in this chart:

  1. Length of post agreed
  2. Suitable candidate for position recruited
  3. Employer reviews status of contract

If there is no change to the post, regular reviews continue, and the manager contacts the employee when the contract is nearing its end. The employee is given access to redeployment. However, if redeployment is unsuccessful, the fixed-term contract ends.

If there is a change to the post and it is to be made permanent, the employee is appointed to the post if they have permanent contractual status. If they do not have permanent contractual status, the post is advertised through the normal recruitment process, including redeployment.

If the fixed-term contract is to be extended only, regular reviews continue, and the manager contacts the employee when the contract is nearing its end. The employee is given access to redeployment. However, if redeployment is unsuccessful, the fixed-term contract ends.

If the fixed-term contract is not to be extended or made permanent, the employee is given access to redeployment. However, if redeployment is unsuccessful, the fixed-term contract ends.
